Some Inspiration

.

ALL PHOTOGRAPHS BY KARL BLOSSFELDT

I adore Karl Blossfeldt's photographs (a few of which are above).

I have been contemplating for a quite a while taking images such as these as a starting point for inspiration to create a new series of large images/wallpapers/collages/murals combined with some incredibly detailed maps that I have.  Nonsensical perhaps, but I love the idea of these gorgeously organic forms in black and white colliding with the organic complexities of man-made cities.  I can see the images that I want to achieve so clearly in my mind.  I just have to do it.

Green Line Competition

My graphic design partnership company BACKYARD DESIGN has designed the website for the Green Line Ideas Competition, which has just been announced.  Visit the site to view entry details.  Congratulations to Workshop Architecture for organizing the competition!

2011 Applied Arts Design Awards

 .

I'm thrilled - BACKYARD DESIGN (the graphic design company I own in partnership with Yesim Tosuner), has just won an Applied Arts design award.  We're in great company!

Anstey Book Binding is also an award recipient - we are very excited to be currently working with them on an Oscar Peterson Folio of photographs for photography studio Gilbert & Associates.  They will be fabricating a beautiful limited edition box of Japanese silk and black leather, with letterpress inserts.

Stay tuned.

W Hotel Wallpaper + Fabrics

.

The W Hotel in Hoboken is now open!  We have designed wallpaper through sister company Backyard Design that has been used on feature walls in all of the 220 guest rooms.  The graphic was also printed as custom fabric for throw pillows and headboard upholstery in the penthouse suites.

OCHRE, NYC, xo

The new W Hotel in Hoboken NJ is nearly complete (featuring wallpaper custom designed for each room in the hotel by Backyard Design), with absolutely stunning views toward Manhattan. Soho appears to be a stone's throw away across the Hudson (currently gleaming as the sun is setting).

Marianne Lovink (www.mariannelovink.com) is installing her Winter Garden sculptures in the three penthouse suites (after which, a well deserved dinner and cocktails will be in order).

This trip to NYC + NJ has of course required a visit to the wonderfully curated store OCHRE, at 462 Broome St. in Soho, where finds include beautiful little handmade spoons and forks with black bakelite handles and handmade Moroccan glasses in delicate tones of ultra light green and cerulean. Naturally, we bought several of each.
